In 1988 Andor Izsák founded the European Centre for Jewish Music (EZJM) in collaboration with the university of Augsburg. Since 1992 the centre has been an institute at the Hanover University of Music and Drama under his administration.
The EZJM is concerned with the documentation and reconstruction of Jewish liturgical music, which could be heard in European synagogues until 1938. For these purposes the centre can fall back on the extensive and unique collection of its principal, which comprises documents, sheet music and sound recordings, as well as some of the few synagogue organs that were not destroyed during the time of the NS regime.
The tasks of the EZJM comprise:
- the search for documents and instruments
- the scientific editing and publishing of music
- the documenting of music in the form of recorded editions
- the presenting of music in concerts and exhibitions
- the promoting of music at festivals and symposia
- the practical teaching of soloists and choirs
